Newberry Men's Basketball Receives NABC Team Academic Award
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Newberry men's basketball team has been recognized for its excellent work in the classroom as a recipient of the prestigious Team Academic Excellence Award by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
Teams must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to be honored by the NABC. Newberry's team GPA was a phenomenal 3.39 following the spring semester. The Wolves were the only school in the South Atlantic Conference and one of three in the Southeast Region to receive the award of the 150 NCAA and NAIA teams recognized. USC Upstate joined Newberry as the only South Carolina institutions honored.
This marks the fourth consecutive season, and fifth time in the seven years of the award's history, that Newberry has been recognized with a Team Academic Excellence Award.
Luke Gibson was named the South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete this season, marking the fourth season in the last five that a Newberry player has won the award (Mitch Riggs, 2014-15 and 2015-16, James Stepp 2017-18), and earned Third Team Academic All-American status. The Wolves had seven players named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll for ending the spring with a 3.30 or higher cumulative GPA.
