The South Atlantic Conference Announces Astroturf SAC Football Players of the Week, Nov. 13 | WATCH
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games the last week of the season. Tusculum quarterback Alex Ogle was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while the Newberry Defensive Unit was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week. Lenoir-Rhyne return man Xzavion Huff picked up Special Teams Player of the Week.
Ogle, a junior from Hobe Sound, Fla., passed for 257 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Pioneers to a 25-17 upset over 12th-ranked and previously undefeated Wingate on Nov. 11. Ogle went 19-of-25 with his touchdown tosses covering 14 and 22 yards. Ogle and the Pioneers jumped out to a 25-0 lead in the first half as he recorded four pass plays of 20 yards. He averaged 13.5 yards per completion and had zero interceptions. On the season, Ogle finished with 2,056 passing yards with 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The plaudit marks his second Offensive Player of the Week selection this season.
As a unit, Newberry's defense limited the SAC's top-ranked offense to 187 total yards on 60 plays, 280 yards below their season average to fuel the Wolves to a 28-0 win over Mars Hill on Nov. 11. The defense came away with six interceptions by six different players to tie the all-time SAC record that was set in 1993. The Wolves also are tied with Appalachian State (D1 FBS) and Trine (D3) for most interceptions in a single game in NCAA football this season. All five second-half Mars Hill drives ended in interceptions as the Lions entered the game with the nation's sixth-ranked passing offense at 329.6 yards per game but was held to 8-for-25 for 63 yards and six interceptions. Mars Hill's team passer rating of 5.2 was the lowest on record for any Newberry opponent in program history. Mars Hill was 2-for-9 on third down and 0-for-3 on fourth downs, while the Wolves totaled three sacks for a total of 23 yards lost and had seven tackles for loss. Newberry also forced a fumble that MHU recovere), broke up a pass and had five quarterback hurries. The shutout was Newberry's first since the 2015 season finale at Wingate.
Huff, a freshman from Maiden, N.C., returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in the Bears' 24-20 setback to Catawba in the regular season finale on Nov. 11. Huff led Lenoir-Rhyne in kickoff return average – 17 returns for 423 yards on a 24.9 average – and finished second on the team in rushing yards this season (227) in addition to two touchdowns. The honor is his first Special Teams Player of the Week nod this season.
