Catawba Sweeps South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Catawba first baseman Hunter Shepherd was named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Baseball Player of the Week, while teammate and right-handed pitcher Riley Myers was named AstroTurf Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played February 4 through February 10, the Conference office announced today.
Shepherd, a junior from Salisbury, N.C., led the Catawba Indians to a perfect 6-0 record last week with wins over Palm Beach Atlantic, Mount Olive, West Virginia State and Mars Hill. He batted .450 with 10 RBIs, two home runs, three doubles and 11 runs scored. Shepherd reached base in all six games, collecting hits in five of the six games. In addition to his phenomenal performance at the plate, Shepherd also took the mound against Mount Olive. He went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in a no decision.
Myers, a junior from Salisbury, N.C., took the mound twice in two starts for the Catawba Indians last week and came away with a 2-0 record. He went eight innings against Palm Beach Atlantic, allowing one run on five hits with nine punch-outs. Myers then threw six scoreless innings versus Mars Hill. He gave up just five hits and had six strikeouts in the win.
This is Shepherd's first Player of the Week honor this season, while this the first Pitcher of the Week for Myers.
