Bears cruise to biggest road win in team history

Korinek becomes fourth player in program history to score five goals in a game

MARS HILL, N.C. - Freshman Raelyn Korinek became the fourth player to score five goals in a game to lead Concordia-St. Paul (2-1) to an 18-3 victory at Mars Hill University (1-2) on Wednesday afternoon at Meares Stadium. Concordia remains on the road tomorrow at Southern Wesleyan with a 4 p.m. (CT) / 5 p.m. (ET) start time in Central, South Carolina.

Korinek joins sophomores Alina Boyce, Kailey Heinl and Maddie Hentges as Golden Bears to score five goals in a single game, with the trio each scoring six in a game once last year while Heinl produced three more five goal games while Hentges had a pair during their freshmen campaigns a year ago. Korinek is the first to score five in a game in 2018.

The 15-goal win is the largest margin of victory in a road game topping last year's 11-goal win at Keiser (Fla.) on March 14. The win gives Concordia two road wins in a row for the second time following last year's three game road winning streak at Northern Michigan (14-8), Ave Maria (Fla., 16-15) and Keiser (17-6) from March 7 to 14.

The Golden Bears used a 31-4 first half shot margin and were the aggressors in the field with a 30-11 first half advantage in ground balls while committing just one foul while Mars Hill was whistled for 13. CSP also had just nine first half turnovers to 19 by Mars Hill.

The result was a commanding 11-1 lead at the break with CSP scoring the first five goals of the game in the opening eight-plus minutes with five different players scoring and four different players assisting.

After a goal by Mars Hill broke the shutout in the 10th minute, Concordia scored seven straight (six before halftime) and held at least a 10-goal lead the rest of the way.

Things evened considerably in a second half which had a much different pace as CSP looked to drain clock with running time at their backs. Mars Hill held slight advantages in shots (10-9) and ground balls (7-6) while fouls and turnovers were each 4-4 in the second half. Mars Hill captured a 12-10 edge on the draw in the contest, winning each half by one.

Despite the game evening out statistically in the second half, it was Concordia who was more efficient at putting the ball in the net in outscoring Mars Hill 7-2 after the break.

It was a balanced approach as 11 different players netted at least a goal, nine different players worked teammates open for an assist, 13 players registered at least one point, 10 players had two-plus point games and seven players had at least a goal and an assist.

Concordia's bench produced six goals and nine assists, as well.

Joining Korinek with a big scoring performance was sophomore reserve Riley Burns with two goals and two assists. Sophomore Kailey Heinl also added a hat trick on offense, all coming in the first half while also collecting three ground balls.

The Golden Bear starting defensive unit of freshman Lexi Stanley and sophomores Cassidy Leininger, Kylie Christensen and Sara Stickler registered just four combined ground balls and two caused turnovers, but that was due to a strong performance in the midfield in preventing Mars Hill from reaching its offensive zone. The defense allowed freshman Claire Hagen to be successful once Mars Hill did reach the attack as she secured her second win in a row in the net with seven saves and just three goals allowed while facing 14 total shots on the day.

The dominance by Concordia's midfielders was also evident in clears with CSP converting 14 of 18 to Mars Hill's 4 of 10 with CSP stifling both of Mars Hill's second half clears.

In the ball control department, Concordia was led by junior Sheala Osborne with five ground balls with Korinek and Hentges adding four each. Korinek and freshman Lexi Dahl each had a pair of draw controls while senior Kallie LaValle and sophomore Alina Boyce each had two caused turnovers.

Boyce and Dahl each chipped in three-point performances with a goal and two assists apiece.

The Lions were led by Olivia Hokanson with two goals while Molly Tobias had a goal and an assist. Hokanson added five ground balls and five draw controls.
