Women's tennis ready for second weekend of spring season

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Much like opening weekend, Carson-Newman women's tennis is set for a pair of weekend matches at the Knoxville Racquet Club when the Eagles face Milligan College on Saturday and King on Sunday.

Splitting the weekend series against Martin Methodist (forfeiture win) and Lee (5-2 loss) the Eagles (1-1) will be challenged in Saturday's tilt versus the Buffaloes (2-1).

After a contested loss in last Saturday's match against Lee, Frederick stressed how important the oft sought-after doubles point is. He will be looking to see improvement from his pairings heading into the second weekend of the spring season, tweaking the lineup to feature Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Klara Vuckovic at the No. 1 doubles position.

Ukrainian teammates Anita Chornei and Alisa Liashova will pair together for No. 3 doubles.

"We played poor doubles (last weekend), and we can play with it (the lineup) for another month," Frederick said. "Once we get into conference play, we have to know what we're going to do and keep that doubles lineup the same."

Head coach Jim Frederick knows that his women's team will be tested Saturday, with the biggest keys to victory being closing out the contested singles matches in addition to the doubles point.

In the fall season of action, Milligan took down a pair of South Atlantic Conference foes in Mars Hill (5-2 win) and UVa Wise (4-3 win) and hope to continue their winning ways versus the SAC in the team's spring opening against C-N. It is the Buffaloes first dual match since Oct. 23.

Milligan posted a 16-12 record overall last season and are returning all four singles players who finished the 2019 season with winning records in dual match play.

Sunday morning play against the Tornado (1-4) sees C-N face off against a team that posted a 1-17 record in 2019, respectively. Three of the Tornado's four losses in the fall came against SAC schools in Tusculum, Mars Hill and UVa Wise.

Opening serve at the Knoxville Racquet Club is set for 2 p.m. Saturday against Milligan and 10 a.m. Sunday versus King.
