Hawks lacrosse wins at Division II Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team scored 10 unanswered goals midway through the game to defeat Division II opponent Brevard College 11-7 on Saturday night.  

The Hawks have back-to-back wins for the first time this season and improve to 7-6 overall. The Tornados fall to 2-8 for the season. This is the first meeting between the two schools.

Huntingdon scored the last goal in the first quarter, four goals in the second, three goals in the third and the first two goals of the fourth quarter to build a 11-4 lead and secure the win.

Sophomore A.J. Harper and junior Kendrick Ballard led Huntingdon in the win and combined for seven points. Harper recorded his first career multi-point game off three goals and one assist while also picking up five ground balls. Ballard tallied his third hat-trick of the season.

The Hawks opened the game with a goal from Caleb Bohrer in the first 1:49 of play. Brevard answered back with a 4-0 run and took a 4-1 lead before Harper found Brandon Scheele with two seconds left in the first quarter to spark the momentum.

Ballard scored early in the second to cut the lead to one goal before Harper scored 49 seconds later to even the score. Bohrer scored a man-up goal to give the Hawks their final lead of the game. Austen Saucier scored with over seven minutes left in the half to give the Hawks a 6-4 lead heading into halftime.

Huntingdon outshot Brevard 16-2 in the second quarter while Sam Hitt went 10-for-12 on faceoffs in the first-half. Brevard also picked up six penalties for five minutes in the second quarter.

After a scoreless 10:52 to start the second-half, Ballard, Harper and Bohrer each scored in a 2:51 span to push the lead to 9-4.

Harper scored his third goal of the game in the first 14 seconds of the fourth quarter while Jackson Schrampfer scored a man-up goal with 7:18 left to give Huntingdon a comfortable 11-4 lead. The Tornados added three goals in the final seven minutes.

Sophomore goalie Matt Murphy recorded eight saves in the win. Hitt finished his day with 16 faceoffs wins and six ground balls.

Offensively, the Hawks had seven players register a point. Saucier finished with one goal and one assist and Bohrer tallied two goals. Schrampfer each Scheele each scored once. Mac Puller had one assist and five ground balls.

Huntingdon will open SEILC play on Monday as they play at Ferrum. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m.
