HOW IT HAPPENED

Mars Hill jumped out a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back two-out base hits, but the Saints tied the game in the home half on a solo shot by Shugan – his second of the year. The Lions would send 10 men to the plate in the second, however, hanging six runs on the scoreboard to move back in front, 7-1.

Limestone would get some of those runs back in the bottom of the second following leadoff walks by junior Hunter Blair (Mount Union, Pa.) and Reel. Cronbach laid down a bunt for an RBI single in the frame before Lombardo drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as the Blue and Gold trimmed the deficit to 7-5 through two. The Saints would then make it a one-run game, 7-6, in the third on an RBI single to center by Turner.

The Lions added two more tallies in the fourth, but Limestone would come storming back with a six-run fifth to take its first lead of the day, 12-9. Despite only two hits in the frame, highlighted by Lombardo's two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded, the Saints would send 11 batters to the dish to pull ahead.

Although the Blue and Gold would not relinquish the lead, Mars Hill made things interesting with a pair of runs in the eighth to close the gap to on. However, Lombardo would come through with another clutch two-out hit to score a pair in the home half before Gaskins shut the door in the ninth to seal the 14-11 win.

GAME 2 INFORMATION

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Limestone would record just three hits in the nightcap and five total base runners
  • Sophomore Clark Burroughs (Swan Point, Md.) went 1-for-3 with a double
  • Shugan collected a base hit and a walk while Lombardo finished with a base knock
  • Sophomore starter Cale Wagoner (San Antonio, Texas) took the unlucky loss
  • He falls to 0-1 on the season despite allowing just two runs on four hits over 4.1 innings
  • Defensively, the Blue and Gold was credited with five errors in the series finale

HOW IT HAPPENED

With two on and one out in the top of the first, Wagoner limited the damage by giving up just one run before he sat down seven straight Lions through three. The Saints would get a two-out double by Burroughs in the bottom of the first and back-to-back two-out singles by Lombardo and Shugan in the third, but the home team was unable to produce any two-out magic as all three runners were stranded.

Mars Hill made it 2-0 with a solo homerun in the fourth before busting the game open in the late innings, striking for three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Limestone would never get anything going offensively with 13 of the last 15 batters being retired quietly as the Lions took the series by a final of 7-0.
