HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Limestone capitalized on its first scoring opportunity of the night, grabbing a quick 1-0 lead as Ney planted his second goal in as many games five minutes into play. That would be the only good look by either club, however, as the Saints and Royals combined for just two shots over the first 25 minutes.
Queens had a terrific look at frame late in the opening half when Adam Ward got behind the defense on a counterattack. He had Limestone senior keeper
Thomas Osborne (Summerville, S.C.) one-on-one, but the resulting shot went wide of the post as the Blue and Gold held its 1-0 advantage at the break.
Second Half
The Royals appeared to have tied the match early in the second half, but an offsides call negated the equalizer as Limestone maintained its lead. That margin would hold up until the Saints were called for an infraction in the box in the 82
nd minute, allowing Queens to tie the contest on a penalty kick.
Overtime
Limestone was forced to play a man down early in overtime as sophomore
Ruairi Croskery (Castlewellan, Northern Ireland) was issued a red card. The Saints would get a pair shots off in the second overtime, but neither of them were on target as the match ended with matters left undecided.
TURNING POINT
The Blue and Gold held a 1-0 lead for a majority of the match, but Queens would punch home the equalizer in the 82
nd minute on a penalty kick to force overtime and eventually a draw.
NOTABLES
- The penalty kick is the only shot on goal the Saints have allowed in two games
- The draw snapped Limestone's nine-game win streak against the Royals
- The Blue and Gold extended its unbeaten streak against Queens to 11 straight games
COACH ALSOP'S THOUGHTS
"Great fight from the team tonight, especially going down a man. It was a tough end-to-end match, and our new players learned quickly what it was like to play in this region. I'm proud of their efforts to maintain the draw, we left it all out on the field tonight and we couldn't ask for much more than that. We will regroup, learn from our mistakes and get ready for Lenoir-Rhyne".
UP NEXT
After a busy weekend to start the 2017 campaign, the Saints will get almost a week off before traveling to face Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday, September 9 at 5 p.m.
