Limestone Baseball Suffers Three-Game Sweep at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Limestone University baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, falling by a final of 5-1 in the middle game of the series before dropping a 7-1 decision in the finale as nationally 19th-ranked Newberry College broke out the brooms for a three-game series sweep.

GAME 1 INFORMATION
Score: No. 19 Newberry 5, Limestone 1
Records: No. 19 Newberry (17-3, 2-0), Limestone (3-18, 1-4)
Location: Smith Road Complex

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Sophomore Bradley Turner (Cayce, S.C.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored
  • Junior Brandon Billesberger (Cochrane, Alberta) added a double and a walk
  • Junior James MacCallum (Atlanta, Ga.) also finished with a base knock and a walk
  • Sophomore Peyton Reel (Clover, S.C.) tallied a single in the first game of the day
  • Limestone finished with only five hits for a second straight game, but worked six walks
  • However, the Saints would leave seven men stranded on the base paths
  • Junior starter Sergio Patsy (Indian Trail, S.C.) put together a solid seven innings, but fell to 0-4
  • Patsy allowed five runs – three earned – on six hits and two walks while striking out four
  • Graduate Garrett Sutton (Gastonia, S.C.) tossed scoreless inning of work out of the bullpen

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints picked up two hits over the first two innings as Billesberger led the game off with a double into right before Turner slapped a two-out single into right-center in the top of the second. Limestone would not capitalize as Billesberger was picked off before graduate Brandt Cronebach (Englewood, Ohio), who worked a leadoff walk in the third, was erased attempting to steal second. The visitors left three men on.

Patsy sat down the side in order in the home half of the first and worked around a one-out infield single in the second but ran into trouble after hitting a batter with one gone before issuing a walk to the next man. The Wolves would push across four runs on just two hits and an error to move in front, 4-0, through three.

Limestone attempted a little two-out magic in the fourth as MacCallum and Turner tallied back-to-back two-out singles, but MacCallum was thrown out at third trying to put runners on the corners for the Saints. Patsy was still dealing though, retiring five of the next six Wolves, before working out of a jam in the fifth.

The Blue and Gold would get its only run of the game in the seventh as Turner took a free pass with one gone before scoring on a wild pitch a few batters later to cut the deficit to 4-1. Newberry added an insurance run in the eighth with a suicide squeeze as the home team took the series with a 5-1 decision.

GAME 2 INFORMATION
Score: No. 19 Newberry 7, Limestone 1
Records: No. 19 Newberry (18-3, 3-0), Limestone (3-19, 1-5)

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Turner drove in the only run of the day for the Saints while adding a walk
  • Billesberger and Reel both tacked on a base hit in the nightcap
  • Sophomore Clark Burroughs (Swan Point, Md.) recorded a base knock
  • Sophomore Gianni Lombardo (Statham, Ga.) finished with a hit and a run scored
  • Freshman Peter Adams (North Augusta, S.C.) added a single
  • Freshman starter Noah Barozzino (Cornelius, N.C.) took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season
  • He allowed four runs – two earned – on six hits and four walks over four innings of work
  • Junior Walker Sigman (Austin, Texas) saw his first action of the year, tossing 0.2 of an inning

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the Saints went down in order in the first, Newberry loaded the bases in the bottom half on an error, a walk, and a bunt single. Despite only logging the one hit in the frame, the Wolves pushed two runs across to move in front before adding a single tally in the second to put the home team on top, 3-0, early.

Limestone put two runners on base over the first four innings of play, but a one-out walk by Turner in the third was erased on a double play around the horn while Burroughs was left stranded after being hit by a pitch with two outs in the fourth. Newberry added another run in the home half of the fourth to make it 4-0.

With runners on the corners and one out following Limestone's first hit of the game – a sharp single to right-center by Adams – Turner laid down a sac bunt to score the runner from third and put the Blue and Gold on the board. The Saints loaded the bags with one out in the frame but managed just the single run.

Newberry got it back in the bottom of the fifth, making it a 5-1 game, and after Limestone again failed to score a run after loading the bases with one out in the sixth, the Wolves put the game out of reach with two runs in the sixth. The Saints would leave a man in scoring position in the seventh to seal the 7-1 loss.
