Second Quarter Woes Prove Costly as Trojans Fall at No. 22 Wingate; 67-58

WINGATE, N.C. – The Anderson University women's basketball team fell to No. 22 Wingate, 67-58, in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Cuddy Arena.

With the setback, Anderson drops to 17-9 overall and 11-7 in conference action while Wingate moves to 21-3 overall and 15-2 in SAC play.

Anderson placed two players in double-figures with sophomore Madison Baggett scoring a team-high 15 points including draining 5-of-6 3-point baskets. Sophomore Alexy Mollenhauer netted 14 points while grabbing five rebounds for the Trojans

Senior Kaylee Koerperich grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in 28 minutes of action. Graduate student Alexis Dillard was plagued with foul trouble playing just 16 minutes in the road loss.

Wingate placed three players in double-figures with Caroline Averette and Marta Miscenko sharing team-high honors with 15 points apiece. Miscenko added nine rebounds and one block to her stat line. Danasia Witherspoon recorded a double-double chipping in 12 points while grabbing 10 rebounds.

Anderson controlled the opening first quarter of action with the Trojans leading the entire stanza with exception to one tie, 19-12.

Wingate answered back in the second period ultimately taking control of the game. The Bulldogs were able to put together two 8-0 runs to erase the deficit and take a five point lead heading into the half, 34-29.

Wingate extended the run to 10-0 scoring the first basket of the third period to push its lead to seven.

The Trojans cut the lead to three twice in the third, both on jumpers by Mollenhauer but were down five with one quarter to go, 48-43.

Wingate used a 6-0 run in the first half of the fourth period to build an 11 point advantage. The Black and Gold chipped away getting as close as six points, 63-57, on a layup by junior Ace Easter with 1:02 remaining.

The Bulldogs were able to make a couple of free throws and a lay-up in the waning seconds of the game to avoid the season sweep by the Trojans.

-Wingate outrebounded the Trojans, 44-32.
-The Bulldogs snapped a three game losing streak with the win over the Black and Gold.
-The Trojans are 3-6 when they get outrebounded by an opponent.
