Cobras Split Saturday at Coker Spring Tournament

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team went 1-1 on Saturday at the Coker Spring Softball Tournament. In game one, Coker fell to Lander by a score of 8-5 and then turned around to take down the No. 11 University of Charleston Golden Eagles by a score of 5-4.

In game one, Lander struck first, plating runs in the first and second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Allyson High belted a double in the bottom half of the second inning, scoring Hannah Price to cut the deficit to 2-1. Maria Williamson added an RBI single in the bottom of the third to tie the game up at 2-2. Lander added another in top of the fourth to regain a one-run lead. The teams exchanged runs in the sixth inning, leaving the score 4-3 in favor of Lander headed to the final inning. Lander plated four in the top half of the inning, while Coker scored two in the bottom half, to give Lander the 8-5 win in the opener.

Riley Morris led the way with two RBIs. Williamson, High, and Hannah Goodman all added one RBI to aid the Cobras on the offensive end.

Augusta Jackson was hit with the loss. She surrendered three runs in three innings of work.

In game two, Williamson got Coker on the board with a blast to left center field to put the Cobras ahead 2-0.After a walk by Tayler Barcomb, High stepped up and slashed a double to score Barcomb and put Coker ahead 3-0. Goodman reached on error, scoring High to put Coker ahead 4-0 at the end of the first inning. Charleston plated runs in the second, third and fourth inning to tie the game up at 4-4. Barcomb scored Kelsi Bachmann in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Coker a 5-4 lead and the eventual one-run win.

Bachmann finished with a two-hit game, while Williamson, Barcomb, High and Goodman all collected hits in the win.

Taylor Forehand improved to 3-1 on the season. She allowed four runs in five innings of work. Tabitha Allen picked up her first save of the season. She scattered three hits in two innings of work.

The Cobras will be back in action on Sunday (Feb. 26) to play Columbus State at 11 a.m. and Fairmont St. at 1 p.m.
