Cobras Drop Doubleheader to Falcons

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Coker College softball team fell to the Pfeiffer University Falcons on Saturday (Mar. 11) in a non-conference doubleheader. Pfeiffer picked up game one by a score of 5-3 and then won game two in eight innings by a score of 5-2.

In game one, Hannah Price got Coker on the board in the first inning, singling to center and scoring Cacey Simmons. In the third inning, a sac fly by Riley Morris once again plated Barcomb, putting the Cobras ahead 2-0. Pfeiffer scored three runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead going into the final frame. Maria Williamson hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh, but it would not be enough as the Falcons took the opener 5-3.

Price led the way with two hits and one RBI. Kelsi Bachmann, Cacey Simmons, Williamson, Barcomb, Allyson High and Hannah Goodman all recorded hits in game one, with Williamson and Morris recording an RBI.

Christine Carver (4-1) was hit with her first loss of the season. She allowed three runs on four hits in four innings.

In game two, Pfeiffer plated the first run in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Falcons held that lead going into the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, Barcomb singled to lead off the inning, then advanced to second on ground out. Morris stepped to the plate and doubled to center to tie it up at 1-1. Two batters later, Goodman singled to left field, scoring Morris and giving Coker a 2-1 lead going into the bottom half of the inning. Three singles by Pfeiffer in the seventh tied the game up at 2-2 and forced extra innings. The Cobras went down in order in the top of the eighth, then Pfeiffer responded with a three-run home run to win game two by a score of 5-2.

Courtney Boan, Barcomb, Morris, High and Goodman all recorded a hit in the loss, with Morris and Goodman picking up RBI.

Nikki Linthicum (4-2) was hit with the loss. She allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning.

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 15) when they travel to UNC Pembroke for a 4 p.m. start.
