Cobras Edged by Crusaders in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Contest

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College field hockey team was edged 2-1 by the visiting Belmont Abbey Crusaders Wednesday (Oct. 10) evening in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action. Kaleigh Cordrey tallied Coker's lone goal in the 46th minute.

The first half of action presented a defensive battle as both defensive units held the opposing offenses to just two shots each in the first half. After a scoreless first half, the Cobras found the back of the net just ten minutes into the second half. Cordrey beat the Crusaders goalkeeper and finished down by the cage. Carla Deuble was credited with the well-placed assist.

Next, Belmont Abbey responded quickly by evening the game at one apiece just three minutes later. Both squads battled for scoring chances until Belmont Abbey took advantage of an opportunity in the 61st minute to pull ahead of Coker 2-1. The Cobras pushed the pace in the final minutes of regulation, earning three consecutive penalty corners. However, Coker failed to capitalize and fell to the Crusaders 2-1.

Cordrey led the Cobras with one goal and three shots on goal. Deuble, Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole, and Kelly Mason recorded one shot each. In goal, Kelsey Gibbons collected three saves. As a team, the Navy and Gold outshot Belmont Abbey 6-5 and created more penalty corners (8-5).

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 17) when they host Queens at 5 PM.
