Cobras Sweep Final Day of Coker Spring Tournament

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team improved to 15-3 on the season, picking up two wins on the final day of the Coker Spring Softball Tournament. In game one, Coker took down Columbus St. in extra innings by a score of 9-7. Coker kept the momentum on its side in game two, scoring a 6-1 win over Fairmont St.

In game one, it was Columbus State striking first, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. A home run by Allyson High in the top of the second cut into the deficit, leaving the score at 2-1 in favor of the Cougars. CSU plated another run in the bottom of the third inning, however it was Tayler Barcomb belting a home run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Columbus St. lead to 3-2. The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-2. Hannah Price homered in the top of the sixth to bring it back to a one-run game. Columbus State added another in the sixth to push its lead back to two runs. Needing two runs to force the bottom half of the inning, RBI singles by Price and Barcomb scored two runs and forced a bottom half of the seventh inning, where Coker would send the Cougars down in order, forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Cobras plated four runs to take a 9-5 lead. Columbus State did not go down quietly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth, however, it was not enough as Coker picked up the 9-7 win in eight innings.

Price led the way, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Barcomb, Hannah Goodman and Augusta Jackson each recorded two hits in game one.

Taylor Forehand improved to 4-1 on the season. She allowed one earned run in 3.2 innings of relief.

In game two, Coker used the long ball to its advantage once again, with Williamson and Barcomb belting home runs in the first and fifth innings. Williamson and Barcomb both finished with two RBIs, while High, Riley Morris and Kelsi Bachmann all had multi-hit games.

Tabitha Allen improved to 3-0 on the season. She allowed just one run in four innings of work, allowing just five hits and striking out four batters.

The Cobras will have some time off before traveling to Columbus, Ga. for the Columbus St. University Classic. Game one for Coker vs. Auburn-Montgomery will be on Friday (Mar. 3) at 7:30 p.m.
