Wingate advances to SAC title tilt with 5-2 victory over Newberry

Box Score Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University freshman midfielder Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) had two goals and senior forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) contributed one goal and three assists to lead the Bulldogs to a 5-2 victory over Newberry College in the semi-finals of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament Friday night at Manchester Meadows. Wingate improves to 15-3 overall and advances to the SAC tournament championship match Sunday. Newberry falls to 12-7 overall.
 
Adams opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a shot from 20 yards. The tally was her fourth goal of the season. Newberry tied the contest eight minutes later, as freshman forward Mary Stanton (Greenville, S.C.) recorded her 12th goal of the season on a header. The two teams went to the halftime locker room knotted at 1-1.
 
Wingate sophomore midfielder Chandler Murphy (Daniels Island, S.C.) gave the Bulldogs the lead for good in the 58th minute, thanks to the first of Adams’ three assists. A Montgomery header four minutes later (on an Adams’ assist) made the score 3-1 Wingate.
 
Newberry junior forward Ashley Reetz (Charleston, S.C.) cut the Wolves’ deficit to 3-2 with an unassisted goal in the 74th minute. Wingate senior defender Casey King (Danvers, Mass.) answered four minutes later with her second goal of the season.
 
Montgomery concluded the scoring with 90 seconds remaining on the game clock, courtesy of an Adams’ assist. A Piedmont High School product, Montgomery has 12 goals this season. She leads the Bulldogs in goals (12) and points (26).
 
For the third time this year, Adams filled her stats ledger with one goal and three assists. Each time, she did the deed against a SAC opponent. On the season, Adams has four goals and a SAC-best 16 assists. The Porter Ridge High School graduate is the all-time SAC assists leader.
 
Wingate outshot Newberry 20-9 on the night, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Bulldog junior goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) allowed two goals and recorded three saves in 90 minutes. Newberry senior netminder Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) played 71-plus minutes, surrendering three goals with one save. Classmate Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) finished the contest, giving up two goals and posting two saves.
 
For the second year in a row, Wingate will face Lenoir-Rhyne University in the Food Lion SAC women’s soccer championship match. The Bulldogs and the number five Bears (17-1 overall) will play Sunday at Manchester Meadows. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
