Softball Splits Nonconference Doubleheader with North Greenville

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University softball team split a nonconference doubleheader with North Greenville dropping game one, 2-0 while winning the nightcap, 4-3 (8 innings) Friday afternoon at the Jan McDonald Field.

 INSIDE THE BOX

 Leading the Trojans at the plate, sophomore Ali Anderson went 1-for-2 with a walk while junior Kasey Grant picked up the only other hit for the Trojans.

 Kayla Pepper (1-1) suffered the loss pitching 6 innings. Pepper gave up four hits and three walks while striking out six Crusaders.

 

North Greenville's Amanda Coffrin (2-0) picked up her second win of the season. Coffrin gave up just two hits while striking out six Trojans.

HOW IT HAPPENED

North Greenville used an error, a double and a single to produce a run in the bottom of the first inning while adding another run in the bottom of the third.

The Trojans had runners on in the third, fourth and seventh innings but could not push any runs across. For the game, Anderson left seven runners on base with three of being in the final frame.

 GAME # 2

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Leading the Trojans at the plate, was junior Joshlyn Martin 2-for-4 with two singles. Senior Cailah Niles, sophomore Ali Anderson and freshman Abi Webb each picked up a hit apiece. Anderson belted a home run while Niles recorded a triple.

Senior Randee Bettis (1-0) got the nod in game two for the Trojans pitching 4 innings before being taken out in favor of freshman Harlie Duncan. Bettis faced 19 batters giving up five hits and three runs. Duncan, earning the win, pitched 4 innings giving up just one hit while striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anderson took the early lead, 1-0, on an Anderson's solo home run in the second inning.

North Greenville turned three singles and a double into three runs in the bottom half of the third inning before Anderson answered back in the top of the sixth with two runs to tie the game at, 3-3.

Niles led the sixth off with a triple followed by sophomore Mattie Hamilton's walk. Hamilton was able to move to second on Anderson's infield out setting the stage for Webb's two-run single to center.

The Trojans sat down the Crusaders in order to extend the game into extra innings. Junior Kasey Grant was placed at second base (international tie-break rule) to begin the eighth. Martin singled with both Grant and Martin moving up a base on a wild pitch with Niles at-bat. North Greenville retired Niles while Hamilton's fly ball to center scored Grant from third before the Crusaders were able to end the inning.

AU's Duncan remained strong in the circle coupled with solid Trojan defense to earn the come from behind victory.

UP NEXT

The Trojans return home Sunday to host non-conference opponent Augusta. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
