HOW IT HAPPENED

Innings 1-3

Anderson started the evening with two straight base knocks, but it looked as if Limestone might get out of its early predicament as Trey Huber recorded two straight strikeouts. However, the Trojans would get on the scoreboard with back-to-back two-out RBI singles to grab a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first.

Limestone went down quickly over the first couple of frames as eight straight batters were retired to start the game for the Blue and Gold. Kennedy blooped a two-out double into shallow center to put the Saints in the hit column, and then scored a few moments later as a pair of wild pitches cut the lead in half, 2-1.

Innings 4-6

In the fourth, both pitchers worked out of very different bases-loaded situations as the visiting Trojans maintained their 2-1 edge. Trey Huber tallied a big strike out after loading the bags with two gone, but the Limestone offense did not give him any support in the home half despite filling the bases with nobody out.

After the Saints failed to capitalize on the golden opportunity with three straight strikeouts, Anderson extended its lead to 3-1 without a base hit in the top of the fifth. Limestone would find some rhythm on offense in the bottom half, however, as the home team pushed across a pair of runs to tie the game.

Junior Michael Roberts (Mount Airy, N.C.) got the inning started for the Saints with a leadoff infield single before racing home on a booming RBI triple by Kennedy that split the alley in right-centerfield. Whetsell then followed by chasing the tying run home with a frozen rope to center, pulling Limestone even at 3-all.

Innings 7-9

After the Trojans scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh, the Blue and Gold used a little two-out rally following the seventh inning stretch to again tie the game. With two gone, Benjamin Huber doubled to right-center before coming around to make it a 4-4 ballgame on an RBI base knock to right by Strovink.

For a third straight game, the Saints would let a game slip through the cracks in the late stages as Anderson jumped ahead, 6-4, with two runs in the ninth. Sophomore Ryan Farkas (Huntersville, N.C.) and senior Jeff Towle (Stony Brook, N.Y.) both singled with two outs in a last-ditch effort to keep the game going for Limestone, but the Trojans got the final out to walk away with the two-run decision.

TURNING POINT

After getting off to a slow start, the Saints had a terrific opportunity to bust the game open in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and nobody out. It would slip by the wayside, however, as the next three batters struck out, and Limestone never recovered as it left 12 men stranded over the final six innings.
