Sailfish rally to 6-5 win over Tusculum baseball

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. --- Jake Summey belted a walk-off, one-out single in the ninth inning to lead Palm Beach Atlantic University to a 6-5 win over visiting Tusculum Saturday afternoon.

The Sailfish (1-1) rallied from a 5-1 deficit to scored two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game and got the Summey's base hit to right field to drive in Eddie Vicinanza with the winning run.

After the home team plated a run in the fourth inning, Tusculum (0-2) batted around in the fifth, scoring five runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Edison Cabrera and a two-run double off the bat of Jeremy Glore.

Tusculum starter Ethan Carpenter was cruising along as he limited the Fish to a single through the first three innings before giving hitting the lead-off batter in the fourth who later scored on a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game.

After the five-run top of the fifth for Tusculum, Palm Beach Atlantic got back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the frame.  Kyle Simon drove.  Sean Visconti drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, and Peter Rivera has a two-out single to bring home second run to trim the deficit to 5-3.  McKenly Berry relieved Carpenter and ended the bases-loaded threat with a strikeout to preserve the TC lead.

In the seventh, the Sailfish came through with another two-base hit a two-run double down the left field line by Visconti to tie the game at 5-5.

Meanwhile, PBA relievers Sam Shields and Joey Hennessey kept the Pioneers at bay.  Tusculum's best chance to break the tie came in the top of the eighth when John Topoleski led off with a single.  After a strikeout, Topoleski moved to second on a balk and over to third on a passed ball.  Cole Baxley drew a walk to put runners on the corners.  Hennessey relieved Shields and proceeded to walk Daulton Martin to load the bases. But Seth DeHaven reached on a fielder's choice but on the play Topoleski was forced out at home and Nick Lacina flied out to end the threat.

TC reliever Ethan Stewart pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth before heading to the ninth with the scored tied at 5-5.

Vicinanza led off the ninth with a pinch-hit single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt to put the winning run in scoring position with one out.  After an intentional walk to Evan Dougherty to put runners on the corners to set up a double play, Summer answered with the walk-off hit.

Noah Johnson led the Sailfish offensively going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Dougherty and Visconti had two hits each.

Lacina, Cabrera and Glore all tallied two hits each for the visitor.

Hennessey finished the game with the win as he went the final 1.2 innings while Stewart suffered the loss.
