HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Newberry grabbed a quick 1-0 lead, striking for the go-ahead score just over five minutes into the contest as Farai Kawonde went top shelf for her fourth goal of the season. The Saints just missed tying the game a few ticks later when Lewis' attempt ricocheted hard off the far post.
The Wolves would not enjoy the lead for long, however, as Limestone broke through with the equalizer in the 12
th minute. Coates sent a pass ahead from about midfield for Diplock who would then place a one-touch perfectly behind the defense, allowing Lewis to finish off the play for her third goal of the year.
Second Half
With the score deadlocked at 1-all coming out of intermission, Limestone had a couple of good looks at the potential game-winner early in the second half. Remley had a shot from just inside the scoring circle blocked in the 45
th minute before a shot on frame by D'Antonio was kicked away by the keeper.
With time starting to wind down in regulation, Keracher got the edge on the defense along the back line before blasting the game-winner past the keeper into the right-hand side of the cage at the 64:37-mark. Limestone would then hold off a couple of late charges by Newberry for the 2-1 win.
TURNING POINT
After surrendering a quick score to start the day, Limestone buckled down and allowed the Wolves to get off just three shot attempts the rest of the way. The Saints would tie things up early in the first half before registering the game-winning score with about five and a half minutes left in regulation.
NOTABLES
- Limestone did not allow Newberry to attempt a shot over the final 35 minutes
- The Saints improve to 15-0 all-time against the Wolves, including a 7-0 mark at home
- Sophomore Thando Muchemenyi (Vienna, Va.) tallied a pair of shots for the Blue and Gold
