Softball Sweeps Home Doubleheader with Davis & Elkins

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University softball team overcame cold conditions to put together 24 hits and 17 runs in its doubleheader sweep over Davis & Elkins winning game one, 8-0, and taking game two, 9-4 on Wednesday evening at the AU Softball Complex.

INSIDE THE BOXES

Leading the Trojans at the plate for the day was junior Kasey Grant batting 5-for-6 with a home run two RBI and four runs scored. Senior Cailah Niles went 5-for-8 with a double and two RBI while junior Joshlyn Martin doubled twice picking up three RBI. Sophomore Mattie Hamilton went 2-for-4 in the second game with a home run. Freshman Abi Webb went 3-for-4 while drilling her first career home run as a Trojan.

Freshman Harlie Duncan (6-1) pitched five innings while allowing just two hits. Freshman Kayla Pepper came in for one inning of work allowing a hit and striking out one.

Davis & Elkins Allie Lapallo took the loss for the Senators pitching 4.1 innings. Lapallo gave up eight hits and six runs while striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Trojans finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Niles. Anderson opened up the scoring in the bottom of the fifth putting five more runs on the board. Senior Rachael Barefield provided the big hit doubling to right center plating three Trojans. The Black and Gold tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning after Martin doubled to right center to end the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Senators jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top half of the first inning using three errors and two walks. Davis & Elkins scored again in the second inning to claim a 3-0 lead.

Anderson rallied back scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning. AU's Breanna Hagerty doubled to center scoring Grant and Martin followed by Hamilton knocking in the tying run by trading places with Hagerty at second.

The Black and Gold kept their hot bats going in the fourth inning adding three more runs. The Trojans used back-to-back doubles and Grant's home run to take a 6-3 lead.

Anderson scored two more in the fifth inning highlighted by Webb's first career home run to give the Trojans an 8-3 lead. Hamilton's solo shot in the sixth inning put Anderson up 9-3 with one inning left.

Davis & Elkins pitch-hitter hit a two-out solo shot to set the final score at 9-4.

Senior Randee Bettis (4-1) recovered nicely from a tough start to give up just three hits while striking out six. Pepper pitched the final two innings giving up just one hit and striking out three.

NOTABLES

As a team, the Trojans have hit 32 doubles, 4 triples and 19 home runs on the season.

UP NEXT

The Trojans travel to Due West on Friday to compete for a Beville Cup point with nonconference rival Erskine. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
