No. 8 Women's Lacrosse Defeats Tusculum 14-5

GREENVILLE, Tenn.  – The nationally eighth-ranked Limestone College women's lacrosse team defeated non-conference opponent Tusculum College 14-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

  • Senior attack Jaylen Schulte (Edgewater, Md.) led the Saints with six goals and five ground balls.
  • Sophomore midfielder Courtney Lafler (Penn Yan, N.Y.) and redshirt-senior attack Carleigh Davis (Eldersburg, Md.) added two goals each.
  • Senior goalkeepers Sydney Teeter (Auburn, N.Y.) and Jane Bartlett (East Lyme, Conn.) split the time between the pipes.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Half
Limestone struck first with a quick goal just a few minutes into play to take the early 1-0 lead. The Pioneers answered with a goal of their own to even the score 1-1 at the 26:38 minute mark. The Saints retaliated with three consecutive goals to extend the Limestone lead, 4-1. Tusculum then cut the Limestone lead in half, 4-2, with 20:30 left on the clock.
 
Down the stretch, the Blue and Gold held the Pioneers scoreless, while adding four goals of its own to take an 8-2 lead into the break.
 
Second Half
The Saints put the first points on the scoreboard to extend the Limestone lead, 9-2 with 26:25 on the clock. After several minutes of back-and-forth action, the Saints snuck another one past the goalie to take a 10-2 lead with 17:41 in regulation. The Pioneers stopped the Limestone 6-0 run with a goal two minutes later to make the score 10-3.
 
Limestone kept the momentum in its favor with two more goals, one of which was a man-up goal, to extend the lead, 12-3. The Pioneers kept working and denied the Saints getting to initiate the running clock rule with a goal at the 10:49 minute mark to make the score 12-4. In the final minutes of play, the Saints outscored the Pioneers 2-1 to finalize the 14-5 victory.
 
NOTABLES
  • The Blue and Gold held a 36-8 shot advantage over the Pioneers.  
  • Schulte tied her career-high of six goals in one game.

The Saints return to action on Saturday, Mar. 25 when they host Pfeiffer University. The Conference Carolinas game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Saints Field.
