Trojans Enjoy Doubleheader Sweep over Augusta

ANDERSON, S.C-The Anderson University softball team used solid pitching and explosive hitting to claim the nonconference doubleheader sweep over Augusta winning game one, 5-2 and winning game two, 11-3 (5 innings) on Thursday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.

With the victories, Anderson moves to 31-13 overall while the Jaguars fall to 17-31 overall.

Game #1

Anderson 5, Augusta 2

Anderson senior Cailah Niles set the tone for the game ripping the ball over the left field fence to open the game up for the Trojans. Junior Joshlyn Martin followed with a double down the left field line. With one out, junior Breanna Hagerty blasted a two-run home run to center to give the Black and Gold an early 3-0 lead.

Augusta got a run on the board in the top of the third to close the gap to, 3-1.

Freshman Abigail Webb led the bottom of the fourth off with a single while getting put-out on Majeski's fielder's choice. Niles again sent a ball over the fence to put the Trojans back up, 5-1.

Augusta tacked on a run in the top half of the sixth to set the final score at, 5-2.

Freshman Kayla Pepper (11-4) pitched 7.0 innings giving up just four hits while striking out three. 

Augusta Morgan Hunter (11-16) suffered the loss giving up eight hits and five earned runs.

Game #2

Anderson 11, Augusta 3 (5 innings)

The Trojans used 10 hits to score 11 runs in game two.

Niles and Martin remained red-hot with Niles belting her third home run of the day in the bottom of the second inning. After three innings of play, Anderson built a 5-0 lead.

Augusta scored a lone run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth to cut the lead to, 5-3. However, the Trojans exploded for six runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to claim the run-rule victory.

AU's Harlie Duncan (14-3) secured her 14th win of the season giving up five hits while striking out four.

Augusta's Courtney Browne (4-10) gave up 10 hits and 11 runs with only five being earned. The Jaguars committed five errors during the game.

NOTABLES

  • Niles batted 4-for-7 with single, three home run and seven RBI.  
  • Martin was 4-for-7 with three singles and a double.
  • Junior Kasey Grant batted 3-for-6 with three singles and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Ali Anderson was 1-for-2 in game two with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Hamilton belted two home runs in four at-bats collecting six RBI in game two.
  • Majeski went 2-for-3 in game two with two singles and two runs scored.

 

UP NEXT

Anderson remains at home on Saturday to wrap up regular season South Atlantic Conference play against Newberry. First pitch is slated for Noon.
