NEWBERRY, S.C. – Racking up 26 points off 21 Newberry turnovers, Carson-Newman secured a sixth straight South Atlantic Conference victory on Saturday at Eleazer Arena taking down the Wolves by 14, 67-53.

The six league victories in a row by Carson-Newman (11-6, 6-2) are the most consecutive by the unit in the regular season since a span of seven straight from Feb. 1-18, 2021. Three of those wins have been by double figures on the road.

"It was a good week for us winning the double overtime game on Wednesday against Tusculum," Carson-Newman coach Mike Mincey said. "It was a short turnaround for us coming to Newberry which is a tough place to play. We couldn't find our offensive footing in the first half but got some in the second half to pull away. More importantly, I thought we defended well. Our defense has been more important for us getting victories than our offense."

The Lady Eagles have won 13 in a row over Newberry (5-11, 1-5) and 17 of the last 19 in the series. Carson-Newman was 14-11 at Eleazer Arena in the series prior to Saturday with three of the last four wins by a combined 12 points. In the last 15 years, the club has won by double figures in the Palmetto State four times.

Six Lady Eagles scored in the game led by four in double figures. Braelyn Wykle (Greeneville, Tenn.) produced a third straight 20-point outing finishing with a game-high 20 in 33 minutes. Campbell Penland (Sevierville, Tenn.) and Skylar Boshears (Lafollette, Tenn.) each tallied 13 with the former adding six rebounds and three steals.

Harli Smith (Jamestown, Tenn.) added 10 points on five of nine shooting with eight rebounds and a pair of assists. It was her second double-digit scoring effort in her last five.

Newberry scored five of the first seven points of the game over the opening 90 seconds before C-N reeled off 10 straight over the ensuing four minutes. However, the Lady Eagles failed to score over the final 3:35 of the period to hold a 14-10 edge after 10 minutes.

In the opening four minutes of the second stanza, Mincey's group built up a 10-point margin at 23-13 only to see the home team score the next nine. Despite the one-point edge, C-N never surrendered the lead going into halftime ahead 31-26.

Midway through the third quarter, the Lady Eagles led by 11 at 45-34 keeping the tally at double figures after the frame thanks to a layup by Boshears putting the team ahead 49-38.

The Orange and Blue made their first five shots of the fourth swelling the bulge to 18 at 60-42 with 6:24 to go in the contest. The Wolves made six of eight from the field in the final period but was outscored by three.

Newberry attempted 24 fewer shots than C-N and only scored two points off of turnovers. Ericka Wisely paced the home team with 13 points and Holly Davies added 10. Six Wolves posted multiple turnovers.

The Lady Eagles return to the friendly confines on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against Limestone. Broadcast coverage airs on Mountain Talk 106.3 FM and cneagles.com/live starting at 5:15 p.m. with "The AEC Countdown to Tip-Off" courtesy of the Eagle Sports Network.
