Cobras Move to 4-0 with Sweep Against Jaguars

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team picked up a pair of non-conference wins on Thursday (Feb. 9) over the visiting Augusta University Jaguars. The Cobras won game one in five innings by a score of 10-1 and then took game two by a score of 5-1.

In the opening game, RBI base hits by Maria Williamson, Tayler Barcomb and Allyson High gave the Cobras a 4-0 advantage after the first inning. Augusta responded with one run in the third inning, however, a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Barcomb, put Coker back on top 7-1. The Navy and Gold continued its stellar offensive performance by scoring three more runs in the fifth inning to secure the 10-1 win in five innings.

Four Cobras recorded mutil-hit games, led by the 3-for-4 performances by Barcomb and Williamson. Barcomb finished with three doubles and five RBIs, while Williamson collected two RBIs. High finished a perfect 2-for-2 from the dish with three RBIs and Riley Morris scored three runs while going 2-for-3.

Taylor Forehand moved to 2-0 on the season. She scattered seven hits in a complete game effort, while only giving up one run.

In game two, a four-run second inning propelled the Navy and Gold out to an early lead. The Cobras extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom half of the fifth innings, thanks to an RBI single by High, which scored Barcomb. The Jaguars responded with a run of their own in the sixth, but it would not be enough as the Cobras secured the 5-1 win in game two.

Hannah Price led the way with two hits and one RBI, while High went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Williamson rounded out the Coker offensive in game two, going 1-for-4.

Christine Carver also moved to 2-0 on the season, scattering just three hits and one run in six innings, while striking out 10 batters.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 11) to host the visiting Chowan University Hawks in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set for 1 p.m. start, with game two set for a 3 p.m. start.
