The South Atlantic Conference Announces 2020-21 Man and Women of the Year Award Winners
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its 2020-21 Women and Man of the Year Awards on Tuesday (July 20). Queens volleyball player Logan Witt was named SAC Woman of the Year, while Mars Hill volleyball player Ully Martins was named the SAC International Woman of the Year. In addition, Lenoir-Rhyne men's lacrosse player Myles Moffat was named the SAC Man of the Year.
Witt recently graduated from Queens with a 4.0 GPA after majoring in health science with a concentration in bioscience and a minor in mathematics. She was also named the 2021 Pamela Davies Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the department and was honored on the Athletic Royal Society, Royals AD Honor Roll, and SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll. She was also named to the 2020-21 Academic All-America® Volleyball Team. The Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field or court and in the classroom.
On the court, Witt was voted to the SAC All-Conference Second Team for the second consecutive season after being an All-Conference Honorable Mention honoree as a sophomore. This season, she ranked second on the team with 2.34 kills per set and hit .225 in the middle. She also chipped in 41 total blocks to lead the team.
Witt was presented the Pamela Davis Scholar-Athlete Award given by the Department of Athletics to a student-athlete who has attained a strong academic record and has excelled in their sport. The award is named after former University president Pamela Davis who served the institution for 17 years (2002-2019), distinguishing herself through her commitment to providing innovative and high-quality education and building community partnerships that enhance the educational experience of Queens students.
Witt's service has not only included the surrounding community of Queens but also in areas around her. She was an assistant volleyball coach for Lake Norman Volleyball club where she was responsible for organizing practice plans, educating teenagers on the importance of resilience and hard-work, and fostering relationships between members of the community. From 2018 to 2019 she was heavily involved in "Build4Case," a Queens University club where she helped in completing specific tasks to help rebuild homes affected by hurricane Harvey in Houston, TX, as well as hard-work and organization to help non-profit organizations that aid the homeless populations of Nashville, TN.
Martins, a recent graduate and defensive specialist, has been a member of the women's volleyball program for four years and currently has a 3.74 Cumulative GPA while majoring in Computer Science with her bachelor's degree. Martins made the Mars Hill Dean's List all four years as well the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll her first three years.
On the court, as a true freshman starter she played in 19 matches for a total of 56 sets, she collected 206 digs, 16 assists and nine aces. As a sophomore who competed in 29 matches while picking up 622 digs, she ranked fourth in SAC digs per set and fifth in overall digs for the SAC. Martins had an impressive junior season with 606 digs, 79 assists and 16 service aces. This resulted in her ranking second in both digs per set and over all digs in the league.
In a short 10 match spring season she concluded her senior season with 223 digs, 34 assists, six aces and became No. 1 in the league for digs per set and digs overall. She was named to SAC First Team All-Conference in both the pre and post season while also helping lead her team to their fourth straight SAC Tournament Bid.
A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Martins is active on and off of the court in the Mars Hill community. She has put together canned food drives with the Mars Hill Student Athlete Advisory Committee during all four years. Martins helped to host Halloween Trunk -or-Treat opportunities for community children, while coaching young children in Brazil every summer. She was an instrumental part in the "Dig Pink", nights where the team would raise money for breast cancer research. Lastly Martins volunteered to help other Mars Hill students better their mathematical skills by tutoring them weekly.
Moffat, a junior attacker from Airdrie, Alberta, Canada has a 3.92 GPA while majoring in Management and Marketing. He has made an appearance on the university's Presidents List three times for having a 3.9 GPA or higher and no B's. Moffat was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Honor Society which honors college athletes who have excelled in the classroom and in competition. He was awarded the 2021 Wayne B. Powell award which is given to one Lenoir-Rhyne male athlete who embodies excellence in the classroom, on the field and is a true leader on campus.
During his first year with the Bears, he was named the South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year as well as an All-SAC Honorable Mention honoree. In his sophomore season he was named a Third Team All-American and Second Team All-Decade member voted on by Lenoir-Rhyne Coaches for individuals who have performed on the field over the past ten years. He was voted the Comeback Athlete of the Year after an injured season. In his junior season he was named a First Team All-SAC Attacker and helped lead the Bears to their victory over Wingate in the 2021 SAC Men's Lacrosse Championship. He also received the 2020-21 SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolade.
Moffat is involved in many service and leadership opportunities starting with many years of volunteer work at the Catawba County Humane Society caring for dogs and cats, while also cleaning cages, walking dogs and caring for cats. He has been part of the Bears Leadership Academy, a program that develops and educates student-athletes on becoming great leaders on the field and in life. Moffat was involved in Lenoir-Rhyne's "828 Day," which included signing autographs and playing games and activities with young kids. He collected donations for a Soup Kitchen in Hickory and participated in Hickory's Christmas parade to support local community members.
Witt and Martins will move forward as the Conference's nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
NCAA member schools nominated 535 female student-athletes for the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award is rooted in Title IX and recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their NCAA eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
The nominees competed in 24 sports across all three NCAA divisions, including 251 nominees from Division I, 107 from Division II and 177 from Division III. Multisport student-athletes account for 141 of the nominees.
