Queens' Case and Lenoir-Rhyne's Crompton Named SAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year for Men's and Women's Lacrosse
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Queens University of Charlotte's Cammy Case was voted the South Atlantic Conference Women's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Lenoir-Rhyne University's Ryan Crompton was named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athelte of the Year, the Conference office announced today.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports, and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee. The winners are selected based on their achievements in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
Case, a junior marketing major with a sports management minor at Queens, holds a 3.84 GPA. She is a three-time Dean's List selection at Queens, a two-time SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll pick and she is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor's Society, the most prestigious buiness honor's society in the nation.
"Cammy has been an outstanding student-athlete her entire career," said Queens head women's lacrosse coach Claire Short. "She held down our defense in every game this season. She came up big in some key moments and showcased her athletic skills in important conference games. She works hard in the classroom and stays dedicated to her academics. I am very proud of her for receiving this award. We are extremely excited for her."
On the field, Case helped lead the Royals to their fifth-straight SAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament Championship. She had 75 ground balls, caused 64 turnovers and had three assists as a defender. She led the SAC and the nation in caused turnovers per game and was ranked in the top-10 nationally in ground balls per game. A two-time First Team All-SAC selection, she was a three-time SAC AstroTurf Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week this season and was named IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week for the week of March 21.
Case, a native of Ellicott City, Md., is very active in the community. She is a member of the Queens Sport Marketing Association and the National Society of Leadership and Success. She helped coordinate the St. Jude "Up 'til Dawn" fundraiser, raising more than $750 from the Queens Athletic teams for the St. Jude Children's Hospital. She also worked with the "Lax 4 Life" program, raising awareness for suicide prevention.
Crompton, a senior from Frederick, Md., is a sports management major with a 3.55 GPA. He is a four-time SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll selection, a Lenoir-Rhyne Athletic Director's Honor Roll honoree, a two-time member of the LR Dean's and President's Lists and a member of Alpha Lambda Delta.
"Ryan is the embodiment of the term 'student-athlete'," said Lenoir-Rhyne head men's lacrosse coach Greg Paradine. "From the time he stepped foot on campus, he was actively engaged in his academics, athletics and community service projects. Whether creating his own business through the Entrepreneurship program, or being named captain of the lacrosse team, Ryan has earned the respect of his professors and peers alike. He has truly left an indelible mark at Lenoir-Rhyne University."
Behind Crompton, the Bears were very successful on field, winning three-consecutive SAC Regular Season Titles, earning a No. 3 national ranking in 2018 and advancing to the 2018 NCAA Division II National Semifinals. Crompton was a two-time All-SAC selection, was a SAC All-Tournament Team selection in 2016 and was named SAC AstroTurf Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week five times this season. During the 2018 season he posted a 9.39 goals against average with 189 saves and he is the Bear's all-time saves leader with 489 for his career.
Off the lacrosse field, Crompton is a member of the Lenoir-Rhyne Portfolio Management Team, a goalie coordinator for the Lax Factory club team and a ball boy for LR football games. He volunteers his time for several organizations, including the North Carolina Special Olympics, the Catawba County Humane Society and Oakwood Elementary School. Crompton was also the receipent of an Entrepreneurship Grant from Lenoir-Rhyne University for the creation of a business named Foody Call, which allows LR students to order food online and have it delivered right to their door.
